The Montrose Center is a Houston institution that is committed to empowering primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families. Since 1978, they have been striving to make permanent, positive changes in attitudes and behavior, working towards a world in which all LGBT individuals can realize their fullest potential. Houston Furniture Bank was honored to be recognized at this year’s IIDA Leaders Breakfast this May 21, 2019. Executive Director Oli Mohammed accepted the IIDA Leadership Award of Excellence in recognition of Houston Furniture Bank’s work providing furniture assistance to families in need. The IIDA Leaders Breakfast is an annual, international event series that celebrates the importance of design. Houston Furniture Bank has been providing essential furniture to families in need for 26 years. This year, we have launched the “No Kids on the Floor” initiative, designed to extend our existing services to more children in our city. The initiative provides complete mattress sets, including a mattress, a box spring and a bed frame, to children in the region who do not currently have a bed to sleep on, the goal being to ensure that all children have a bed to lay their heads upon each night in Houston. Celebrating 26 Years of Making Empty Houses Homes On March 30, 2019, Houston Furniture Bank celebrated 26 years of Making Empty Houses Homes. Mayor Sylvester Turner presented our organization with a proclamation designating March 30, 2019 as Houston Furniture Bank Day in the city of Houston and also introduced the No Kids on the Floor initiative. This event was generously underwritten by Dickson Furniture Manufacturers and Landmark Furniture.
