Terrence McDonald helped Houston Furniture Bank found our Mattress Recycling Center in 2012. For 35 years, McDonald has been the Executive Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County. Terry’s road to entrepreneurial leadership began with a modest tool employed by many nonprofits- the retail thrift store- and has expanded to encompass a small empire of reuse, recycling and upcycling businesses. Hal Lynde, Board Chairman of Houston Furniture Bank and Financial Advisor at Raymond James Financial in Houston, has been announced as one of three national finalists for the Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 14th Annual Invest in Others Awards. Lynde is being honored for his work with Houston Furniture Bank, which will receive a $10,000 donation from the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation. If Lynde wins his category, the donation will increase to $50,000. 100,000 Mattresses Recycled at Houston Furniture Bank!

This month, we celebrate an important milestone: 100,000 mattresses recycled at Houston Furniture Bank! This number represents the work of countless individuals. Houstonians donated their mattresses. Mattress companies and the City of Houston partnered with us. Houston Furniture Bank employees and volunteers put in countless hours of hard work. Beginning in 2012, the program recycled 6,000 mattresses in its first year. In 2019, that number grew to over 27,000 mattresses recycled. 100,000 mattresses, laid end to end would reach beyond Port Arthur from Houston. For 27 years, through historic floods and economic downturns, Houston Furniture Bank has helped Houstonians get the furniture they need to turn empty houses into homes. Elderly Couple Staying Home Comfortably, Thanks to a Makeover From the HFB “DIVAS”

Janet and Willie are two seniors who received a complete home makeover, courtesy of the DIVAS of Houston Furniture Bank earlier this spring. Overcoming a foreclosure and a bedbug infestation, the couple was forced to walk away from furniture they had accumulated over a lifetime. Today, the pair is comfortably sheltering in place in their fully furnished home, thanks to the thoughtful efforts of DIVAS volunteers. Janet and Willie were connected with Houston Furniture Bank through Star of Hope, a social service agency that supports homeless families in Houston and one of over 45 agencies that partner with Houston Furniture Bank.
