Today’s Houston Furniture Bank (HFB) Board Spotlight features Board Member Mark Montgomery. Mark has been on the Board of Directors for three years and has provided significant support to the Mattress Recycling Center. He has remained committed to the success of Houston Furniture Bank during times of great need, including the relocation after the fire and the recent increased need after Hurricane Harvey.
Mark was recruited to Houston Furniture Bank by fellow Board Member Larry Cress. “Larry presented the thought of a true social enterprise serving the community, providing jobs and helping the environment,” said Mark. “We worked together to fund storage containers at the Port to collect mattresses to be recycled vs. filling our dumps (picture NRG Stadium filled every year with discarded mattresses). I later asked to be a part of the board and have enjoyed working with the Board and staff to help create opportunities for those in need.”
Mark has been married to his lovely wife Maura for 27 years and together they have three adult children. He joined the Houston banking community in 1981 and currently serves as the Houston CEO for BBVA Compass. His passion is discovering ways to add value for his clients both personally and professionally. Mark has served on various non-profits; some of his favorites are Rebuilding Together Houston, Project Grad, Houston Furniture Bank, Connect Community, Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Boys and Girls Clubs.
“After 25 years of existence, Houston Furniture Bank quietly serves the needs of Houstonians in so many ways, yet so few have heard of us. More people need to know about our good work,” said Mark. “We are striving to be self-sustaining while meeting the needs of so many.”
Thank you, Mark, for all your support!
