The Woodlands, TX (October 14, 2022) The Furniture Bank Houston (HFB) has served the Greater Houston community for more than 30 years by providing essential furniture for families and individuals in need. In 2021, The Furniture Bank served 1,485 families and 1,035 new mattresses were distributed through the “No Kids on the Floor” initiative. The Furniture Bank Houston’s mission of “Making Empty Houses Homes” began in 1992 when The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD connected with The Furniture Bank Houston to serve patients who were transitioning out of mental health facilities. Solar Powered! Houston Furniture Bank and Green Mountain Energy Sun Club Celebrate New Solar Array

Green Mountain Energy Sun Club has installed an 85-kilowatt rooftop solar system to cover 70% Houston Furniture Bank’s annual electricity needs, supporting the mission of Making Empty Houses Homes! The Green Mountain Energy Sun Club has provided over 10 million dollars in sustainability grants to nonprofit organizations since 2002. Apply here! This week, 50 Houston-area children received a special delivery of a new bed! For the second year in a row, Houston Furniture Bank and Spindletop Charities have come together to provide beds to kids around the holiday season as a part of Houston Furniture Bank’s “No Kids On The Floor” initiative, a program that provides new beds to kids, thanks to the financial support of the community. On July 31st, 2020, Houston Furniture Bank celebrated an important milestone: 100,000 mattresses recycled at Houston Furniture Bank! This month, we celebrate an important milestone: 100,000 mattresses recycled at Houston Furniture Bank! This number represents the work of countless individuals. Houstonians donated their mattresses. Mattress companies and the City of Houston partnered with us. Houston Furniture Bank employees and volunteers put in countless hours of hard work. Beginning in 2012, the program recycled 6,000 mattresses in its first year. In 2019, that number grew to over 27,000 mattresses recycled. 100,000 mattresses, laid end to end would reach beyond Port Arthur from Houston. It’s Pride Month and Houston Furniture Bank is proud to be celebrating sixteen years of partnership with the Montrose Center! The Montrose Center is a Houston institution that is committed to empowering primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families. Houston Furniture Bank was honored to be recognized at this year’s IIDA Leaders Breakfast this May 21, 2019. Executive Director Oli Mohammed accepted the IIDA Leadership Award of Excellence in recognition of Houston Furniture Bank’s work providing furniture assistance to families in need. The IIDA Leaders Breakfast is an annual, international event series that celebrates the importance of design. Celebrating 26 Years of Making Empty Houses Homes On March 30, 2019, Houston Furniture Bank celebrated 26 years of Making Empty Houses Homes. Mayor Sylvester Turner presented our organization with a proclamation designating March 30, 2019 as Houston Furniture Bank Day in the city of Houston and also introduced the No Kids on the Floor initiative.
