Houston Furniture Bank is seeking a proactive, creative, and motivated person to join our team at the Director level. The ideal candidate will be mission-driven, passionate about “Making Empty Houses Homes,” and experienced in strategic communications, innovative communication and outreach practices, paid communications, earned media, and team management. The Director of Communications will be responsible for developing and implementing internal and external communications strategies. Activities include content creation and management for the website, mailing list, social media, and internal communications.
Houston Furniture Bank is a 501c3 Charitable organization whose mission is “Making Empty Houses Homes.” Every month, Houston Furniture Bank provides furniture assistance to over 100 families and beds to over 80 children, recycles over 2,000 mattresses, redistributes over 1,300 pieces of furniture to families in need, and provides employment for over 50 families as a committed second chance employer. Houston Furniture Bank operates a number of social businesses to supplement grant funding and donations, including two furniture outlets, the “Mattress Builders” at Houston Furniture Bank and Mattress Recycling Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Identify stories and develop them
Gather statistics to support communications priorities
Collaborate with marketing/public relations vendors to support media and advertising priorities
Update website blog
Manage newsletter
Manage social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Linkedin
Project management for special events/fundraisers
Manage Board Communications
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS
3+ years of communications experience
Self-starter with the ability to work independently
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of all social media platforms
Ability and proven record of learning new technologies as needed
Knowledge of WordPress, Shopify
Comfortability/experience with a diverse workforce and client and donor base
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Light graphic design
Photography
Spanish a plus

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS/WORK SCHEDULE
The Director of Communications will office at 8220 Mosley Rd (Hobby Airport area), 7-4, Monday through Friday. There will be some need to visit the second location in Spring, TX at 295 Sawdust Rd as well as the occasional need for evening and weekend work to support special events and projects.

This is a full-time position, including healthcare. Compensation is $37,000/year.
