Furniture For A Cause
For 28 years, Houston Furniture Bank has been Making Empty Houses Homes, providing furniture assistance to families in need. You can support our mission by donating your gently-used furniture or shopping for a cause at Houston Furniture Bank’s Furniture Outlet where you can find great deals on high-quality furniture.
Programs HFB Supports
From the Furniture Outlets that help keep us running to our popular Mattress Recycling Center that provides high-quality mattresses to those who need them (and second-chance jobs for workers who may have trouble finding employment elsewhere), the opportunities we provide for you to help support those in your community are set up in a way that allows anyone to contribute, whether it’s with your time, pieces of lightly-used furniture you no longer need or have room for, with a financial donation, or with the purchase of a piece of furniture.
The Houston Furniture Bank Furniture Outlets are the perfect place for patrons to contribute to the HFB’s mission while picking out the perfect piece of furniture for their home. While most of our programs revolve around providing beds, mattresses, and other vital pieces of furniture to those in need, the retail segments of our organization feature furniture of every shape, size, and intent. From couches to cabinets, the HFB Furniture Outlets are the perfect places for one-stop furniture shopping for those who want great deals while supporting even greater causes.
The Furniture Outlets help to support the rest of the programs that HFB provides to those in need. We had the opportunity this past year to expand our reach with another location, even while everyone in Houston was still reeling from the havoc COVID-19 has wreaked. In October of 2020, HFB’s second North location in Spring opened its doors, making it even more convenient for us to support Houstonians in the northern part of the city and the surrounding area when they need it most, and making it even easier for patrons to support us in turn! We can’t wait to use this growth to fuel our ever-expanding programs and touch even more lives.
The Furniture Distribution Center is how the Houston Furniture Bank facilitates donations between donors and the families or individuals that need them the most. With the help of a number of organizations across the city helping to support those in need, HFB finds those it can best support and those who can best support them with donations of furniture and mattresses, and helps the donations get to donees that need them, whether they can leave with the pieces themselves or they need HFB to transport the furniture to them.
Notable accomplishments of this program is the support offered to victims of Hurricane Harvey through our disaster relief program, but equally important are the specific lives that HFB touches through our Furniture Distribution program. The Ortiz family, one of many the HFB has helped over the years, was kind enough to share with us just how much our donation impacted them when they needed it the most.
HFB are always looking for new organizations to partner with. Are you either a part of an organization that would be interested in providing us candidates who need our services, or do you know of an organization that we would partner well with? Get more information about the Furniture Distribution Program and those we partner with on our Furniture Distribution Center page, and help us in our goal to help us in Making Empty Houses Homes!
The Houston Furniture Bank’s “No Kids On the Floor!” program is a program with a very simple purpose: to get every child in Houston off of the floor and onto a bed. Houston isn’t immune to the wake of poverty sweeping through the nation, made worse by the echoes of COVID-19. For this reason, even families who managed to keep or move into a home may not have all of the essential furniture they need. A good night’s rest isn’t a luxury. The effects sleep has on the brain, especially a young brain that’s still developing, is an important part of ensuring that the child’s development physically and mentally isn’t stuntend — and, more importantly, it helps them live a healthy life here and now as well. Long-term sleep deprivation can have devastating consequences on a child’s wellbeing, and lacking a quality bed or mattress can make getting good sleep impossible.
Over 50,000 children have been given beds by HFB since our doors opened in 1992. Unfortunately, thousands more children are still out there without one, and we won’t rest until we’re sure every child in Houston can rest easy. If you would like to help us pursue this dream, you can set up a one-time or recurring donation by visiting our “No Kids On the Floor” program page linked below. Every dollar helps, so thank you very much for your support!
Do you know how many mattresses in Houston are just thrown into landfills every year? Approximately 750,000. The worst part about that is that approximately 80% of mattress components are recyclable, so the amount of useful material just being thrown away is more than needed to ensure that nobody in the city needs to sleep on the floor because no mattresses were available.
Since our Mattress Recycling program opened in 2012, HFB has recycled over 100,000 mattresses to date, and the rate at which we’re able to provide high-quality mattresses is only growing by the year. This means we can provide more and more families with one of the most essential pieces of furniture around, while keeping the mess out of our landfills in the process.
If you have an old mattress you no longer need, consider donating it to HFB! We have two convenient locations, and have partnered with the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department to open six Neighborhood Depositories all around Houston, to make sure you never have very far to travel to help out those in need. Please note that there is a fee associated with mattress recycling, noted in the Mattress Recycling page linked below. This fee helps to sustain many of HFB’s programs, and the donation helps us offer valuable jobs to those who may otherwise have difficulty finding employment.
What’s better than the handing off of a vital, valued set of essential furniture? Essential furniture with a piece of art to go with it, donated to the Houston Furniture Bank by local artists who are thrilled to give back and to give their art away to those who need it the most!
Decoration is more than just an aesthetic addition to a house. It’s what turns a house into a home, and what makes a space feel lived in. It’s a place to tell others about you and your interests, and for those who cannot afford the bare necessities, it’s an item of luxury that may be out of reach forevermore.
HFB is proud to introduce our Art Gallery, designed to give everyone our Furniture Distribution Program helps a piece of art with their donated furniture. With approximately 100 families helped per month, that means we go through donated art fast! If you are an artist who would like to donate your beautiful, jaw-dropping creations to someone that otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it, HFB can help make that happen! Each and every donation comes with a placard that lists the name of the artist as well as the name and retail value of the piece they donated, so they know exactly who helped them in their time of need.
The materials harvested from the Mattress Recycling Center are quickly put to use by the Houston Furniture Bank Mattress Builders. Our Mattress Builders are professionals who take the parts and raw materials harvested, and turn them into durable, high-quality mattresses that go to our “No Kids on the Floor!” campaign, our disaster relief programs, to other non-profit organizations at special rates, and to our Furniture Outlets to help keep HFB sustainable.
Our Mattress Builders are a team who work hard to support the community, and to support HFB, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude for all that they do! They are an essential part of our mission of Making Empty Houses Homes.
The Houston Furniture Bank D.I.V.A.S. team takes “Making Empty Houses Homes” to a whole new level. D.I.V.A.S. stands for “Designing Interiors Volunteer At your Service”, and are a team of volunteers that work in association with HFB to really make homes come alive. Based on case worker recommendation, every one to two months the D.I.V.A.S. team will take on a project to completely revamp the home of a family that needs it.
Our D.I.V.A.S. team is a very special group that takes the creativity and the ingenuity of our awesome volunteers, pairs it with the resources that HFB has at our disposal, and creates some truly spectacular outcomes for families trying their hardest to improve their circumstances. If you’re looking for a way to further HFB’s mission by volunteering, the D.I.V.A.S. team is the perfect way to make a massive difference in a family’s life!
The Charitable Furniture Purchase Program (or the CFPP) is the way Houston Furniture Bank collaborates with other charitable organizations and non-profits around Houston. Because of the duration of HFB’s service in Houston, many local businesses offer us discounts on their furniture. HFB passes those savings on to 501(c)3 organizations, or disaster recovery efforts.
HFB will facilitate the giving out of furniture through our South location. See the CFPP’s dedicated page for more information, or to contact HFB about becoming partners!
