Leadership Announcement

The Furniture Bank Welcomes Frank Monacelli as Chairman of the Board

As The Furniture Bank enters its next chapter, it does so under the leadership of a familiar face, longtime supporter, and passionate advocate for families across Greater Houston.

Frank Monacelli, Chairman of the Board of The Furniture Bank

For more than three decades, The Furniture Bank has helped transform empty houses into homes by providing essential furniture, beds, and household items to families facing hardship. As the organization enters its next chapter, it does so under the leadership of a familiar face and passionate advocate.

The Furniture Bank is proud to announce the appointment of Frank Monacelli as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

A longtime supporter of the organization, Monacelli steps into the role with a clear vision for the future: expanding awareness, strengthening partnerships, and growing The Furniture Bank’s impact across the region.

“As you get older, you become more aware of the impact you’ve made, or hope to make, in leaving the world a better place.”

Frank Monacelli

“Taking over as Chairman was not something I originally envisioned, but when the opportunity arose, I felt a responsibility to help lead an organization I’ve been passionate about since nearly day one,” Monacelli shared.

For Monacelli, the mission of The Furniture Bank is deeply personal because it addresses one of the most fundamental yet often overlooked needs facing families in crisis: the need for a furnished home.

“Everyone can connect with our mission because it touches all of our lives through the basic need for furniture, mattresses, and a stable home environment.”

Building on a 33-Year Legacy

Since its founding in 1992, The Furniture Bank has served tens of thousands of families throughout Greater Houston while becoming one of the nation’s largest furniture banks. Yet despite its impact, Monacelli believes many Houstonians are still unaware of the organization’s work.

“The Furniture Bank has built a proud legacy over the past 33 years as a largely self-sustaining nonprofit.”

Frank Monacelli

“However, despite our longevity and impact, many people in Houston still don’t know who we are or what we do,” he said.

As Chairman, he plans to focus on expanding community awareness, strengthening operational systems, increasing business development efforts, and building relationships with corporate partners, foundations, government agencies, and community leaders.

His long-term vision is ambitious.

“I believe The Furniture Bank has the potential to become as recognizable and impactful as the Houston Food Bank.”

Frank Monacelli

“If we can achieve that level of visibility and support, we can significantly reduce furniture poverty while also helping address the enormous issue of mattresses filling our landfills,” Monacelli said.

Connecting Homes, Education, and Opportunity

One area Monacelli is particularly passionate about is the connection between a furnished home and educational success.

He believes that something as simple as a bed, desk, and chair can create meaningful opportunities for children.

“A child who sleeps in a bed and has a desk to do homework has a greater opportunity to succeed academically.”

Frank Monacelli

“By providing those basic essentials, we can help improve educational outcomes and positively impact the future of our communities,” he explained.

This belief has led him to explore partnerships with charter schools and educational organizations, creating new opportunities to support students beyond the classroom.

Expanding Impact Through Partnerships

Monacelli sees collaboration as one of the organization’s greatest opportunities moving forward.

“More nonprofits are beginning to collaborate and take a holistic approach to community impact.”

Frank Monacelli

“That creates tremendous potential for collective growth and service,” he said.

At the same time, he recognizes that financial sustainability remains one of the organization’s greatest challenges. As demand for furniture assistance continues to rise, increased support from donors, foundations, and corporate partners will be essential to meeting community needs.

Strengthening relationships across Houston’s business, nonprofit, furniture, and public sectors will be a key priority during his tenure.

“People genuinely want to help. They simply need to know we exist and understand the tangible impact we provide to the community.”

Frank Monacelli

A Commitment to Sustainability

Beyond furnishing homes, The Furniture Bank plays a critical role in environmental stewardship through its mattress recycling program.

Houston sends hundreds of thousands of mattresses to landfills each year, creating a significant environmental challenge. Through mattress recycling, The Furniture Bank diverts thousands of mattresses annually while recovering valuable materials and extending the life of usable products.

“Our mission is not only about helping underserved families. It is also about advancing sustainability through repurposing, recycling, and keeping usable items out of landfills.”

The Moments That Matter

Among the thousands of families served by The Furniture Bank, one memory continues to motivate Monacelli.

He recalls delivering furniture to an apartment that contained nothing more than blankets and pillows spread across the floor.

When a bed was delivered for a young boy, the child became emotional and said something Monacelli has never forgotten:

“This is the first bed I’ve ever had.”

“That moment put everything into perspective for me,” Monacelli said. “While we serve thousands of families each year, there is still so much more work to do.”

Growing Recognition Across Houston

Monacelli’s vision for greater awareness and community engagement is already gaining momentum.

Earlier this year, The Furniture Bank leadership traveled to Houston City Hall, where the organization received an official proclamation from Mayor John Whitmire designating April 14, 2026, as Houston Furniture Bank Day.

The recognition highlighted the organization’s decades of service to Houston families and its ongoing efforts to address furniture poverty, environmental sustainability, and children’s wellbeing.

Reflecting on the occasion, Monacelli described the proclamation as an important milestone for the organization.

“We are all here at City Council. We just were given a proclamation today from Mayor Whitmire for the Houston Furniture Bank, and it’s given us, I think, a lot of credibility, awareness, and certainly visibility with City Council.”

Frank Monacelli

“Oli did a fabulous job today for the presentation, and we’re looking for bigger and better things to come,” he said.

The recognition comes at an exciting time for The Furniture Bank as the organization prepares for one of its most important fundraising events of the year.

Save the Date

Making Empty Houses Homes Gala

On September 9, 2026, supporters, community leaders, corporate partners, and advocates will gather at the Hilton Houston Post Oak for the annual Making Empty Houses Homes Gala.

The event serves as a critical fundraiser supporting The Furniture Bank’s mission to provide beds, furniture, and household essentials to families rebuilding after hardship.

“We want everybody to make it if they can. Put it on your calendar and come make a difference for The Furniture Bank.”

Frank Monacelli

Proceeds from the Gala directly support programs that help ensure children have safe places to sleep, families have furnished homes, and essential services remain available to thousands of households throughout the Greater Houston area.

Looking Ahead

As The Furniture Bank prepares for its annual Making Empty Houses Homes Gala this September and continues its vision of ensuring no child sleeps on the floor, Monacelli is focused on bringing new voices and new energy into the organization.

Among his goals are expanding volunteer opportunities, recruiting future board leaders, and launching a Young Professionals Board to engage the next generation of community advocates.

“The future of The Furniture Bank depends on collaboration across the education, furniture, mattress, nonprofit, and business communities.”

Frank Monacelli

“Together, we can create lasting change for families experiencing furniture poverty across the Houston metro area,” he said.

For those interested in becoming involved, Monacelli offers a simple invitation:

“Visit our facility. Take a tour. Once people see the scale of the operation and the lives being impacted, they immediately understand the importance of our work.”

Frank Monacelli

As Chairman, Frank Monacelli brings a bold vision, deep commitment, and a passion for service that will help guide The Furniture Bank into its next era of impact.

One where every family has the opportunity to turn an empty house into a home.
