This week, 50 Houston-area children received a special delivery of a new bed! For the second year in a row, Houston Furniture Bank and Spindletop Charities have come together to provide beds to kids around the holiday season as a part of Houston Furniture Bank’s “No Kids On The Floor” initiative, a program that provides new beds to kids, thanks to the financial support of the community.
Each child received a brand new mattress, box spring, and bed frame, along with new bedding. The mattress themselves were manufactured by Houston Furniture Bank’s Mattress Builders. The children in need of a bed were identified by Small Steps Nurturing Center, a preschool for economically at-risk children living in the Fifth Ward and the Youth Development Center, a non-profit organization providing an after school academic intervention program for at-risk students in grades 1–6 in Houston’s Greater Fifth Ward.
Spindletop Leaders Lia Valone and Constance White arrived early in the morning at Houston Furniture Bank to help with the load up. 50 of each item were loaded onto trucks for delivery. Lia and Constance took the time to thank the Houston Furniture Bank team, including the Mattress Builders, who were responsible for creating the beds.
Constance White, the outgoing Executive Director of Spindletop Charities, has been working tirelessly to improve the lives of Houstonians for over 30 years in her role. She accompanied the delivery drivers from Muscles for Hire for a whole day, meeting families and helping those who wanted to set up the new beds in their homes.
It was such a wonderful day. I’m leaving Spindletop after 38 years. It was incredible to see the need that is out there and to be able to help these families. This day is going to be a powerful memory for me, always.
Spindletop Charities, Inc. enhances the lives of at-risk youth through funding and volunteering from the oil and gas industry, working to help the next generation of Houstonians succeed by providing them with the necessary tools. These fifty beds for children were funded by the personal donations of Spindletop’s Emerging Leader Steering Committee. Lia Vallone, who was recently named as the new Executive Director of Spindletop Charities, is an enthusiastic supporter of the “No Kids On The Floor” initiative.
Spindletop Charities understands that beds for kids is a very important intervention. We know that hundreds of thousands of children in Houston do not have a bed of their own. Our members have come together to help make sure that these children can focus on learning and growing.
Houston Furniture Bank is working with community partners like Spindletop Charities to provide a new, quality bed set to children in need. Already this year, 800 children have received a bed, thanks to generous donations and important community partnerships with nonprofit organizations, foundations, and generous Houstonians. With one in three Houston-area children living below the poverty line, it is estimated that over 300,000 children do not have a bed of their own. Houston Furniture Bank invites you or your organization to help us make this important intervention in the lives of the next generation. Join us in saying “No Kids On The Floor!”
As an extension of this program, Houston Furniture Bank is organizing the second annual “No Kids On The Floor” Bedding Drive! Donate new bedding for kids and help make the holidays cozier for children in need! Learn more!
