Mark Taylor: Leading with Purpose at The Furniture Bank Resale Outlet
Most people dream of slowing down in retirement. But for longtime furniture retailer Mark Taylor, retirement looks a little different. Instead of stepping away from the business world, he has chosen to use his decades of experience to make a difference in countless homes across Houston.
At The Furniture Bank, the mission has always been simple yet powerful: furnish hope by making empty houses homes. For more than 30 years, the organization has provided essential furniture to families who need it most. One way it sustains its mission is through social businesses-ventures that generate revenue while fueling hope.
When The Furniture Bank first launched the Bargain Bazaar in 2008, it was a bold experiment. Could a resale store really help fund a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring no child sleeps on the floor? The answer was a resounding yes.
That store evolved into The Furniture Bank Outlet Center in south Houston (8220 Mosley Rd., Houston, TX 77075). As our first furniture store, it continues to support the mission while offering the community affordable furniture options.
From Doubt to Dedication
Fast forward to today, and The Furniture Bank has expanded its social enterprise efforts with a second store – The Furniture Bank Resale Outlet Store in north Houston (5900 North Fwy, #127, Houston, TX 77076). Much of its success is thanks to Mark Taylor, the man behind the idea and its day-to-day operations.
Mark spent much of his career operating as many as ten stores under the Landmark Furniture and Mattresses for Less brands. When he first heard about The Furniture Bank more than a decade ago, he wasn’t sure what to think.
“I actually thought The Furniture Bank might be a scam at first,” Taylor admitted. “To me, the name didn’t make it clear that it’s a charity. But once I learned they provide furniture to families in need and help ensure no child sleeps on the floor, I knew I wanted to be involved.”
That discovery sparked what has now become a long-standing partnership. When The Furniture Bank began exploring new ways to sustain its mission, Taylor stepped forward with a bold idea: launch a second resale store in north Houston where every dollar would help families in need.
A Store That Gives Back
From day one, the Resale Outlet Store has stood out as more than a typical resale shop. Everything on the floor comes from community donations, whether from families, retailers, or interior designers and every purchase supports The Furniture Bank’s programs. Shoppers enjoy incredible deals while making a direct impact on local families in need.

Those numbers reflect more than sales, they represent children with safe beds, families with furnished homes, and progress toward a city where no child sleeps on the floor.
Taylor’s vision goes beyond sales. “If you ask 10 people in Houston, I’d like at least eight of them to know about The Furniture Bank,” he explained. “The more people who know, the more they’ll want to help.”
More Than a Business
The Furniture Bank Resale Outlet Store has also become a lifeline for those who arrive in need. Though it is not formally part of The Furniture Bank’s Furniture Assistance Program, staff frequently step in to help families on the spot.
One recent example involved a woman with very little money who needed a mattress. “We sold her a king mattress set for $100,” Taylor said. “You can’t do that anywhere else. But we can, because every bit helps keep the mission alive.”
With the Outlet Center in south Houston and the Resale Outlet Store in north Houston, The Furniture Bank continues to prove that social businesses are a powerful way to sustain its mission-helping ensure that no child in Houston has to sleep on the floor.
