Prairie View A&M University Extension Partners with The Furniture Bank to Support Families in Need

When families fall on hard times, even the basics—like a bed, a table, or a chair—can be out of reach. That’s where The Furniture Bank and Prairie View A&M University Extension step in, working together to transform empty houses into homes and restore dignity for families in Houston.

Through the Houston Furniture Assistance Program, Prairie View A&M extension agents identify families in Harris County who need essential furniture. Working alongside The Furniture Bank, they help connect those families to beds, sofas, dining tables, and more—offering not just furniture, but stability and hope.

Serving Families Where the Need is Greatest

Greg Rose, Community Economic Development Agent for Prairie View A&M, describes the process as one rooted in care and practicality. His team acts as caseworkers, meeting families where they are and carefully assessing their needs.

“We start with intake forms, reaching out through churches and community centers,” Rose explained. “Then we prioritize families—those experiencing homelessness, recovering from fire loss, or struggling with extreme need. Together with The Furniture Bank, we’re able to get them the furniture that makes a house feel like home.”

For many families, this assistance is life-changing. A kitchen table provides not just a place to eat, but a place to gather, do homework, and build family routines. A bed offers rest, security, and the simple dignity of no longer sleeping on the floor. Each item delivered represents a step forward on the path to stability.

More Than “Just a Bed”

Rose is quick to point out that the work is about more than filling rooms with furniture—it’s about giving families a foundation to thrive.

“Some people may see a bed as just furniture,” he said. “But to a child who has been sleeping on the floor, it means everything. It’s comfort, it’s dignity, and it’s the chance to rest and dream.”

This belief connects deeply with The Furniture Bank’s No Kids on the Floor initiative, which is dedicated to ensuring every child in Houston has a safe, comfortable bed to sleep in. Together, Prairie View A&M and The Furniture Bank are making measurable progress toward that goal.

A Partnership Born of Purpose

The partnership between Prairie View A&M and The Furniture Bank began around 2020–2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when families across Houston faced heightened economic stress. Since then, it has grown into a reliable pipeline of support for families in crisis.

Each year, the program aims to serve between 50–80 families in Harris County, and the numbers continue to rise. Rose notes that the goals increase annually as both organizations look for new ways to expand their impact.

The Cooperative Extension Program, part of Prairie View’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, was created to serve Texas communities beyond the campus. Today, it operates in 66 counties statewide, with the mission of extending education, health, and economic resources to where they are needed most. Its Houston Furniture Assistance Program is just one example of how this land-grant university fulfills its legacy of service.

Furnishing Hope, Together

At The Furniture Bank, our mission is simple: to furnish hope by making empty houses homes. Partnerships like this one with Prairie View A&M University Extension bring that mission to life every day.

Every referral, every delivery, every bed placed in a child’s room represents more than just a piece of furniture—it represents a fresh start, a restored sense of dignity, and the belief that better days are ahead.

“Some may see it as providing a couch or a bed. But for families in need, it’s everything. It’s a chance to rebuild, to gather, to rest, and to grow.”

Thanks to the shared commitment of Prairie View A&M University Extension and The Furniture Bank, more Houston families have a place to sit, a place to eat, and most importantly, a place to dream.

How You Can Help

Partnerships like the one with Prairie View A&M University Extension show what’s possible when communities come together. But the need is still great—thousands of children in Houston sleep on the floor every night.

You can make a difference today. Donate, volunteer, or spread the word about The Furniture Bank’s mission to furnish hope by making empty houses homes.
