Helping Families Start Over Faster Through Partnership with HUGGS

In Greater Houston, disaster recovery does not end when emergency shelter begins. Through a meaningful partnership with HUGGS, The Furniture Bank helps families move from crisis toward comfort, dignity, and stability.

In Houston, disasters are not rare events. Apartment fires, floods, and severe weather can suddenly leave families without the basic things that make a house feel like home. Even after emergency shelter is arranged, many families still face an empty space with no bed, no table, and no place to begin again. That is where the partnership between HUGGS, Inc. and The Furniture Bank is creating real impact across Greater Houston. Together, the two organizations are helping families recover faster by making sure essential furniture and household items reach those who need them most.

Meeting Families in the Last Mile of Recovery

HUGGS, Inc., short for Helping Underprivileged Girls & Guys Succeed, was founded in 2018 after Hurricane Harvey. Since then, the organization has focused on an important part of the recovery journey that many systems miss, the point where help must become practical, personal, and immediate.
A family may have a roof over their head again, but without furniture, without a bed, and without a table, it is not yet a home.
Through partnerships with the American Red Cross and other agencies, HUGGS receives verified referrals for families affected by disasters, especially apartment fires. Once a referral is received, their team works quickly, often reaching the family within 48 hours to assess needs and coordinate next steps.

That quick response matters. For many families, the first few days after a disaster are the most overwhelming. Practical support delivered at the right time can help restore a sense of control and comfort when everything feels uncertain.

Why Furniture Matters in Recovery

Emergency housing can provide safety, but it often does not provide stability. Families may enter a new apartment or temporary home only to find it completely empty. Without beds, seating, or a table for meals, it becomes much harder to rebuild routines and create a sense of normal life. Through this partnership, The Furniture Bank provides access to furniture vouchers, mattresses, and household essentials that allow families to begin rebuilding almost immediately. What may seem simple can make an enormous difference for parents, children, and seniors trying to recover after sudden loss.

Support that restores dignity

A furnished home offers more than comfort. It gives families a place to sleep, gather, eat, and begin healing together.

A Regional Need with Human Stories Behind It

HUGGS serves Harris, Fort Bend, and Brazoria counties, while also supporting broader disaster response networks across 13 counties. This combined reach covers more than 8 million people in a region where disasters can happen at any time of year. In just the past four months, HUGGS has helped around 100 families recover from multi-family fires. Behind every referral is a personal story of hardship, uncertainty, and resilience. One such story involved a 90-year-old woman who lost everything in a fire, including the only photograph she had of her mother. While no organization can replace every loss, support from the community can still help restore a sense of care, dignity, and hope.

Stronger Together

The partnership between HUGGS and The Furniture Bank reflects a broader truth about disaster recovery. No single organization can do it alone. Lasting impact depends on trusted partnerships, coordinated referrals, and people working together so families do not fall through the cracks. This collaboration also supports sustainability. Through The Furniture Bank’s mattress recycling efforts, thousands of mattresses are diverted from landfills and turned into a resource that helps families in need. It is a practical solution that supports both people and the environment.

Looking Ahead

As Houston moves toward another hurricane season, the need for fast and compassionate response remains urgent. Families will continue to face unexpected loss, and partnerships like this one will continue to play a vital role in helping them start over with stability and dignity. Donations, volunteer support, and community involvement all help make this work possible. Every act of support helps ensure that when disaster strikes, families do not have to begin again in an empty home.

Help Houston families rebuild

When the community comes together, recovery becomes faster, stronger, and more human. Support from donors, volunteers, and partners helps turn empty spaces into homes filled with comfort, hope, and a fresh start.
