Houston Furniture Bank (HFB) is pleased to announce that the 25-year-old nonprofit organization is one of the recipients of the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The fund was set up by Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmet to support the long-term relief and reconstruction efforts in the Greater Houston region – to fill the gaps that are not currently being met by other local and federal efforts.
Houston Furniture Bank has provided essential furniture to approximately 1,800 Houston-area families as part of our Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts to date, giving thousands of pieces of furniture to help families rebuild. As a city, we are now entering a long-term recovery phase, with many families still struggling to recover from this devastating event.
This $750,000 grant will make it possible for Houston Furniture Bank to purchase and provide furniture for at least 700 families. Each family will receive:
- 2 sets of beds,
- Kitchen dinette set
- Sofa
Families to receive furniture will be selected by partner agencies and referred to Houston Furniture Bank by a caseworker. HFB has partnered with many local agencies throughout the greater Houston area including:
- BakerRipley
- Houston Health Foundation
- Project 8 to 8
- Family Services Houston
New partnerships and grants, such as this one, are making it possible for HFB to continue ongoing long-term recovery efforts. Houston Furniture Bank will continue providing furniture to families and individuals who need it, for as long as we have resources available to continue our efforts.
