  • Volunteer Needs in Houston During COVID-19

While Houston Furniture Bank has suspended all volunteer activities on sight, there are many ways you can help your fellow Houstonians through volunteerism. Listed below are some ways you can get involved during the coronavirus outbreak, some of which can be done from home! Please keep in mind that if you have any symptoms, are 65 years old or older, have immunodeficiency or live with someone who does, you should stay home.  The most important thing you can do during this time is to protect yourself and others by self-isolating.

Volunteer From Home #VirtualVolunteerism

Harbor Hospice

Needs volunteers to make companionship phone calls to residents at their nursing home:

“Many of our patients, whether in their personal homes or in nursing homes, are in need of companionship. Volunteers are needed to call and check in on elderly patients.

We like to reach out to let them know that we are here for them. It’s nice to have someone to talk to and to know that they are not alone. These calls can be made from the comfort of your own home!”

Operation of Gratitude

Needs volunteers to write handwritten letters of gratitude to first responders and medical personnel. “This is a time for every American to take action to support our Deployed Troops, National Guardsmen, First Responders, and Emergency Medical Personnel who are on the frontlines of this pandemic. Our response to COVID-19 is a call to action for #VirtualVolunteerism. Handwritten letters are the most cherished items in our Care Packages. Encourage your employees, family, and friends to take a break and write a note of encouragement. This is also an activity that children love to participate in.”

Operation Gratitude

Needs volunteers to make paracord bracelets for first responders. “This is a time for every American to take action to support our Deployed Troops, National Guardsmen, First Responders, and Emergency Medical Personnel who are on the frontlines of this pandemic. Our response to COVID-19 is a call to action for #VirtualVolunteerism. We include handcrafted paracord bracelets in every one of our Care Packages because they’re both functional and meaningful. You can purchase the cord in bundles of 5 by visiting Operation Gratitude’s eBay site, or you can send an email to engagement@operationgratitude.com to order 100 or more paracords for your family and friends.”

Donation Delivery for Harbor Hospice

“Due to the recent COVID 19 pandemic, our patients and families need us now more than ever. Our population is being largely affected by this deadly virus due to their age demographics and preexisting diagnosis. By being apart of the donation delivery team, you will help distribute tissue and water by leaving them on our families’ doorsteps. Come join our team and make a huge impact on the lives of many as our nation faces this huge transition.”

The Beacon of Downtown Houston

Needs volunteers to assist in making and assembling sack lunches that are given to those who are homeless. “The Beacon of Downtown Houston is a collection of different programs designed to assist Houston’s homeless population. These three programs come together under one roof to provide meals, showers, laundry service, pro bono legal services and pastoral care to our neighbors in need.”
