The Brewton Family is back! Highschool sweethearts Jon and Kerry grew up in Houston, attending their senior prom together and matriculating to the University of Houston before starting their careers. A position with Chevron sent the family abroad for the past seven years where they lived in Thailand and Angola, and their two girls picked up some eclectic language skills. In Houston this summer, the girls are enjoying visiting their grandmother and attending summer camp at the St. Stephen’s School where they are enrolled for the fall, their first school experience in the U.S.
The family has taken up residence in downtown Houston and needed all new furniture, having left everything behind at their last posting. Kerry remembered how, years ago, her family donated a mattress to Houston Furniture Bank. At that time, she visited the Furniture Outlet at Houston Furniture Bank showroom and was so impressed with the quality and prices that she knew she would be back one day.
With an entire home to furnish, the Brewtons purchased some beautiful beds, couches, and chairs — the four of them coming in together to make their selections as a family. They were able to find a lot of pieces in the mid-century modern style they prefer. There was some urgency for the new furniture…. the family is getting their home ready for their new golden retriever, Daisy, who will join them when the house is “Daisy ready.”
When the Houston Furniture Bank delivery truck arrived to deliver their furniture, Kerry had forgotten her keys! Happily, she reported to us that Houston Furniture Bank driver, Kevin, “a gem of a human,” patiently waited for her to go and retrieve them. For the Brewtons, shopping at the Furniture Outlet at Houston Furniture Bank made a lot of sense. Not only did they enjoy quality, selection and good service, but they were able to support the mission of the Houston Furniture Bank, furnishing their own home and helping others at the same time. We are so grateful to hear that Jon and Kerry have been spreading the word to their friends and family. At Houston Furniture Bank, we depend on these personal recommendations to let people know that they can give back simply by purchasing the furniture they need.
In 26 years of service, Houston Furniture Bank has helped an estimated 100,000 individuals. Following Hurricane Harvey, Houston Furniture Bank has provided assistance to over 3,000 families affected by the storm. In 2018, 900 families were able to select essential items from the Houston Furniture Bank Furniture Distribution Center and 1,317 Hurricane Harvey-affected families were served. This year, Houston Furniture Bank also has launched its “No Kids on the Floor” initiative, working to ensure that no child goes without the rest that is essential to growth and learning by providing bedding to children in need. Purchases made in the Furniture Outlet go directly toward supporting the Houston Furniture Bank’s mission of Making Empty Houses Homes.
