The second-annual “No Kids on the Floor” Bedding Drive was a great success! Heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated! Individual Houstonians, furniture retailers, interior designers came together to help children in need during the holiday season. Altogether, new bedding for 400 children was donated!
During December, many individuals and businesses purchased bedding online which arrived daily at Houston Furniture Bank! Others visited participating retailers and partners to drop off their donations of cozy bedding. We had amazing participation from Laura U Design Collective, Elizabeth Cole Design, ASID, M and M Lighting and John Brooks. It was such a pleasure to receive these donations at Houston Furniture Bank, placing them in our Distribution Center for families to select.
The largest donation came from Ashely Homestore! At 12 participating locations, generous Houstonians donated 250 bedding sets for children in need, each including a sheet set, pillow and comforter in a variety of styles. These were delivered to Houston Furniture Bank’s newly opened North location by a team from Ashley Furniture that included St. Nick himself!
Throughout the year, Houston Furniture Bank works with over 50 nonprofit partners to connect families in need with furniture assistance. The “No Kids on the Floor” program is about addressing the need in the Greater Houston Area. Based on poverty statistics, Houston Furniture Bank estimates that 300,000 children do not have a bed of their own to sleep in each night. In 2020, the “No Kids on the Floor” program provided beds to over 1,000 children, thanks to the donations of generous Houstonians who are investing in our community’s children.
At Houston Furniture Bank, the collected bedding is now being selected by parents and children receiving furniture assistance. Many families received bedding just in time for the holidays.
Kennsy Reyes, a mother of five girls, was overwhelmed when we interviewed her after her furniture assistance appointment the week of Christmas. “I wasn’t expecting this,” she said. “Everything is wonderful!” During her appointment, Kennsy told us that she was able to pick out “everything that a house needs.” From sharing meals together on the floor, the family now has the essential furniture they need. Not only this, new bedding for her girls made for a cozy holiday for the family. We called Hezikiah Bell, another mother, to catch up after the holidays. “My daughter LOVED the bedding,” she told us. “It had unicorns all over it and it was perfect just for her!”
At Houston Furniture Bank, we are so grateful for those who give as well as those who receive and share their journey with us. We know from 28 years of service that our work is about providing a helping hand and about putting good out into the world. All year, we work with caseworkers, colleagues and customers who, having received kindness, are intent upon paying it forward. In these difficult times, it is truly an honor to be a part of this circle of giving.
We invite you to be a part of Team “No Kids on the Floor!” Help us grown this program by making a monetary contribution. Every $150 donated allows Houston Furniture Bank to manufacture and give away a bed to a child in need! Thank you, Houston!
