Kids on the Floor?
One in every six Houstonians currently lives below the federal poverty threshold.
What’s more, another 500,000 Houston area families are struggling to make ends meet, earning less than half of that same federal poverty threshold.
While definite statistics about the exact number of children sleeping on the floor are elusive, what we can certainly determine is that there are a significant number of families who are struggling to meet their most basic needs in the Greater Houston region.
Many of the families who come through the door at Houston Furniture Bank tell us they do not have mattresses for their children.
Houston Furniture Bank thanks you. Donate with debit and credit cards, or use your PayPal account.
Why are mattresses important?
A good night’s sleep is essential for children. According to Rachel Dawkins, M.D., with the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital,
Studies have shown that kids who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and even depression.1
Houston Furniture Bank will work with organizations and the community to create a healthy living environment where no child sleeps on the floor.
Ultimately, our goal is to raise funds to provide 100 twin mattress sets each month to the children of the families we serve through our Furniture Distribution program.
A History of Service
Houston Furniture Bank has served over 50,000 children in 26 years. In 2018 alone, we served 1,348 children, with an average of 112 per month between our disaster relief and regular furniture distribution program.
Serving More Children
Many Houstonians are unaware that children in our city are sleeping on the floor.
Through No Kids on the Floor, Houston Furniture Bank will highlight the great need in our city.
Houston Furniture Bank is partnering with BakerRipley and Northwest Assistance Ministries to provide mattresses to children in need. Many additional partners will be needed to reach our goal of continually providing children in need with a new mattress.
Houston Furniture Bank needs your support for the No Kids on the Floor initiative. Your family can donate today to help provide twin mattress sets to the families we serve each month in our Furniture Distribution Center. Any amount is welcome and goes toward filling this need.
